Kosjeric is a town and municipality in Western Serbia. The municipality has 15,000 inhabitants, but the town itself has 5,000. The municipality contains 359 square kilometers and has some 26 villages which are mostly placed in the river valleys, but there are also some smaller settlements in the mountains, some more than 1000 meters high. Kosjeric is famed together with other places in the surrounding area for fresh air and beautiful nature. The town is surrounded by high mountains, fields, woods and water wells. It is famous for country tourism and the production of healthy food. The climate is very appropriate for all kinds of sports; hence the town has become famous for its sport centre of some 40,000 square meters, and includes an Olympic pool and several football, basketball and handball playgrounds.
The foundation of the town has been lost in the mists of time. Near the town however, archeologists have found Roman and Serbian medieval artifacts, it is believed though that mass immigration started before the Serbian Revolution at the beginning of 19th century with people from Montenegro, East Bosnia and from the Western Serbian mountains Zlatibor and Tara. This part of Serbia was originally under the rule of the Nemanjic dynasty until the Ottoman Empire ceased control of the country in 1463.
In the following two centuries roads were created and major developments began linking the Adriatic Sea to western Serbia and to the east. Various wars between the Austria-Hungary and the Turks during this time took a toll on the population numbers in Kosjeric. Development in the town really began to take off in 1882, but it was suppressed by the faster growing communities of nearby bigger towns, Valjevo and Požega. Kosjeric eventually began its current status in 1966 and economic development followed after the finishing of the Belgrade-Bar railway in 1972, it is now firmly established as a major tourist destination in Serbia.
